Google Updated, Again

Wait, there is ANOTHER update? Of course, but don’t fret. This isn’t a huge game changer. First, it wasn’t even big enough to name. Second, this new algorithm improves the distance and location ranking parameters for a local search. It also ties deeper into the Knowledge Graph, spelling correction, synonyms, etc. So, why write about it if it doesn’t matter? Well, Google Pigeon has bigger implications to consider.

With the Google Pigeon update, Google is improving local search through more accurate location metrics and furthering their semantic and knowledge graph search functionality. Wow, that was a mouthful. This update basically affects local search. For our customers, this means you.

What Does Google Pigeon Change?

Small businesses will start to notice changes in their website referrals and leads. While Google doesn’t directly say what percent of search queries are impacted by this, already people have noted some industries being affected. (Mostly, real estate and the marketing/web designers.) It will eventually roll out to more industries. Google’s goal is to improve their distance and location ranking parameters.

The idea is that small businesses should be showing up in search just as much as the big box stores. A win for small business! It also means you need to make sure Google knows who you are, where you are, and what you do. Otherwise, they don’t know when you should show up in search. This will also change how you show up in Google Maps.

Now what?

This reinforces the need for search engine optimization (SEO) on your website, but also content marketing. Writing content is the best way to let search engines and your customers know about your brand. And this goes beyond alt tags, headers, and keywords. It’s about unique, quality content.

Also, make sure all your real estate is consistent online. We mean Yelp, TripAdvisor, Google Business, social media and other directories. The Google Pigeon update will also make these review sites more equal, not showing preference to Google specific services. Ultimate, the goal is to help small businesses, not hurt them.
